“Marriages are made in heaven” but one most not forget that marriages are broken on earth’. For a happy marriage alliance, it is necessary to form a correct  judgment as to suitability or otherwise of a couple. It is very common, almost necessary, to consult an astrologer about a proposed marriage alliance to see whether the horoscopes of boy & girls agree. In fact, much touted practice of Gana matching does not deserve the importance it is usually given nor it is to be considered as a decisive factor in matching. The various factors in match matching in order of importance are :-

   1. Longevity of partners
   2. Mental & Physiological health
   3. Factors showing separation or divorce
   4. Compatibility of partners

The question of  compatibility between partners will arise only if first 3 factors indicate that both are going to stay together.
Therefore, after examining basic structures of Horoscopes of partners, it is ensured that long married life is indicated when this assurance is indicated, question of compatibility of partners comes into picture which is examined by ‘Gana’ agreement & ‘Mangali dosha’. The need for assessing the structure of the horoscope need be over emphasized before examining aspect of compatibility.
There are total 36 Ganas and in the Gana agreement, compatibility of partners is examined from various points of views relevant to happy married life. The various aspects & points assigned to them are –

   4. Friendship between lords of moon signs – 5
   5. Yoni – 4
   6. Tara – 3
   7. Vasya – 2
   8. Varna – 1

Maximum  importance in Gana agreement is given to Nadi which indicates physiological & hereditary factors. Depending upon birth nakshtras, nadi is of three types namely ADI, MADHYA, & ANTYA. If Boys & Girls belong to same Nadi, it is considered as Nadi Dosha & marriage may not be recommended. Nadi dosha adversely affects the compatibility & health of married couple. After Nadi, next in importance comes matching of moon-signs i.e to examine mutual disposition of moon-signs of two. These relations may be 7-7, 2-12, 3-11, 4-10, 5-9 & 6-8.

Gana-maitri indicates nature of native and are classified as Divine (Deva), Human (Manushya) & Demon (Rakshash). Deva gana indicades dignity & goodness, Manushya indicates  combination of good & bad, whereas Rakshash indicates contempt, meanness, & selfishness. Marriage between boy & Girl belonging to same gana is considered Best, whereas between boy of Deva gana & girl of Rakshash gana is prohibited. Matching of lords of moon signs is important from the point of harmony between husband & wife. Yoni indicates sexual compatibility between partners. The Tara indicates problems in the married life, likely to be faced by the couple. Vashya is very important for the purpose of mutual attraction between the partners. Varna which are categorized as Brahmin, Kshtrya & Shudra indicates the capacity to shoulder the responsibility of the family. For happy married life, the compatibility of boy should be more than that of girl.

We, therefore , see the compatibility from the different angles and in case there is matching of more than 18 ganas, marriages are recommended.

The other important factor which is considered for matching of horoscopes and understood by each and every individual in our country is ‘Mangali Dosha’. The ‘Mangali Dosha’ means the harmful effects of Mars. Among the malefic planets, Mars has come to enjoy such an important role in breaking of marriages that the harmful influences of Mars has come to be known as ‘Mangali Dosham’ and boy or girl having adverse influence of Mars in the horoscope is general known as ‘Mangali’ Boy or ‘Mangali’ Girl.
